Thiago holds a Master in Arts in Classic Performance by the Hochschule für Musik der Stadt Basel (Switzerland), with minors in Contemporary Music and Orchestra, he graduated with honors in the clarinet studio of the renowned professor François Benda. He began his music studies in Mauá (Brazil) his hometown at the “Assembléia de DEUS” church, following studies at Escola de Música do Estado de São Paulo (EMESP). He obtained his bachelor’s degree at UNESP – Instituto de Artes in São Paulo, where he studied with Luís Eugênio Afonso Montanha, and Sérgio Burgani.
In Brazil, he was awarded in more than competitions, including: Jovens Talentos Brasileiros (2007), Jovens Solistas da Orquestra Experimental de Repertório ( 2005 and 2006), Jovens Solistas da Orquestra Jovem Municipal de Guarulhos (2004) and Jovens Intérpretes do Centro Cultural de São Paulo (2003) and others. He was finalist in important competition and audition in Europe as: International Clarinet Competition in Krsko (Slovenia, 2008), Concorso Internazionale per Clarinetto - Cittá di Carlino (Italy, 2009), Zurich Opera House Orchestra Academy (2009).
During his studies in Switzerland, he had the opportunity to participate in masterclasses and workshops with important musicians and composers such: Felix Renggli, Sergio Azzolini, Marcus Weiss, Jürg Hennenberg, Heinz Holliger, Helmuth Lachemann, Frederic Rzewski. In 2009, he was selected among music students in Switzerland to participate in an Orchestra Project, which consisted with masterclasses with musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and a concert at the famous Tonhalle of Zurich. In Switzerland, Thiago developed a strong connection with the music of our time, he was a member of the Zeitegenössische Musik Ensemble, participating in the celebration of Elliott Carter’s 100th anniversary.
In 2012, he moved to United States of America, where he is pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Iowa, under guidance of Dr. Maurita Murphy Marx. Thiago is a member of the Center for New Music of the University of Iowa, with this group he has been travelling around US performing and premiering pieces by composers of the 20th and 21stcentury, including pieces by David Lang, Gerard Grisey, Anthony Chang, and many others. In October he is performing “Lus in Bello” by Carolina Heredia, with the world famous string quartet JACK Quartet during their residency in Iowa. In November he is going to Cincinnati, where he is going to premier 4 pieces by Iowa composers.
During the years 2012 and 2013 he was a faculty member at the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Fortaleza, Brazil. He is a founder member of EpHawk Quartet, with this group he toured during the summer playing Messiaen – Quartet for the end of time, obtained a good reception by the public and critics. Thiago is the recipient of the prestigious “Iowa Performance Fellowship” granted by the Graduate College of the University of Iowa, and during his studies in Switzerland he received a scholarship by Ruth und Hans Rapp Stiftung.
